Bold color and modern lines for a family of seven.
After my Robledo clients sold their furnished home, the new owners called me during the early COVID-19 pandemic to rework the upstairs playroom and downstairs kitchenette for their family of seven. The five children were more into video games than blocks, and the parents needed a place to relax with an after-dinner drink.
Designer's notes
Downstairs, we created a jewel box wine bar inspired by a to-die-for chandelier from a French hotel that the wife had picked up at the Paris flea market but never brought out of storage. With Cabernet in mind, we lacquered the cabinetry, walls, marble-topped island, and ceiling in Farrow and Ball's deep purple Brinjal paint. In the sunlight, it really takes on a life of its own and feels so special. The client and her mother have a thing for snakes, so a custom runner with the animal motif leads visitors down the stairs.
Upstairs, an artwork from the clients' collection inspired the saturated palette for the new kids' lounge. At that point, the youngest child was 11, so we needed furniture that is both comfortable and durable, and just feels a little bit more grown up, for a space where all five could hang out. Redesigning these two spaces helped give the house a new life for a family more drawn to modern silhouettes and bold color than the previous homeowners.
